Epidural injections for radiculopathy are a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure primarily used to alleviate chronic pain caused by irritated or damaged nerves in the spine. Radiculopathy, often characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling radiating down the arms or legs, is frequently caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease.

During this procedure, the patient is typically positioned lying facedown. The area of skin where the injection will be administered is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, the physician carefully inserts a needle through the skin and between the vertebrae into the epidural space, which is the area surrounding the membrane that protects the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Once the needle is correctly positioned, a contrast dye is often injected to confirm that the medication will flow to the correct area. Following this, a combination of a corticosteroid and a local anesthetic is injected. The corticosteroid serves to reduce inflammation and swelling around the nerve roots, while the anesthetic helps to numb the pain.

The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, followed by a short recovery period. Most patients can return home the same day. Epidural injections for radiculopathy can provide significant pain relief, enhance mobility, and allow patients to resume their normal activities. It is an effective treatment option for patients whose symptoms have not improved with conservative treatments like medications or physical therapy.
